Question:I plan to switch to Mac from PC and I’m considering of buying an iMac that worths around $2000. How long do you think my iMac will last?
Answer: If you’re lucky you can get your iMac up to running until 5 or more years (lucky in this context means that your iMac doesn’t has any factory defect that could shorten its lifespan).
It also hugely depends on how you treat your machine. I’d suggest you to buy AppleCare Protection plan along the purchase since your iMac will have the advantage of getting free recovery from computer damages within three years.
After the period, technical men/specialists who fix faulty Apple hardware might be able to fix your iMac for cetain service prices. You will have to search for them at your place if there’s any for the repair work.

I think it also largely depends on your needs from a machine - if you like/need the latest thing, you’ll need to upgrade sooner. But it’s pretty touch to predict any major changes in the market - the biggest move just now seems to be touch screens.

Wow, $2000 for an iMac. Honestly I am a PC fan, I can get a latest PC for $700 from Dell. This is why I love PC and keep changing every other day with a latest one. Why should I bother to invest $2000? What is that i am going to get in return that I can’t do with a PC.

I had a compaq before I had an iMac, the brand new iMac cost me $1080, the compaq cost $800 new, then the hard-drive went bad, had to buy a new one for 80, they never gave me a Windows install disk, that was an extra 200 for full install, ran good for a while kept having to upgrade ram cause it kept getting slower, overall I probably spent about 1400 on my compaq for a good 4 years of usage and upgrades.
With my new iMac though I have Apple Care Plan which basically covers all hardware failure costs and came with a free MacOSX install disk. So I expect to save approx. $420 over buying a new PC. Probably more since Apple will be offering the new Snow Leopard for only 30 dollars! Macs are a more expensive investment but pay off in the long run. Of course, you could own a PC and it run trouble-free for years, depends on your luck I suppose.
