What is Celcom Broadband?
Celcom Broadband is a mobile broadband internet connection service provided by Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad which aim at providing the Malaysians with high speed internet connectivity anytime and anywhere. To date, they claim to be Malaysia’s No.1 mobile broadband provider as they have the widest coverage (over 71% Malaysia populated area).
What technology does it use?
It uses 3G and 3.5G (or HSDPA) technology. Basically the 3G speed they are offering is up to 384Kbps downlink while 3.5G speed is up to 3.6Mbps downlink. If your area is embraced with the 3G/HSDPA coverage, you will get the speed they promoted according to the package you’ve chose. Otherwise, you will only get GPRS speed which is slightly faster than 56Kbps dial-up connection.
Below are the plans that they are currently offering.

The package variation is good for its adaptability to meet the need of people with different financial background or situation.
What devices do we need to get connected to the internet?
1) 3G sim card: After registering at Celcom Tower or any Celcom Broadband reseller you will be provided with Celcom 3G sim card for free.
2) 3G broadband modem: This vary with promotion. Either you buy one (such as Huawei 3G USB Modem) for promoted price, bundled or buy separately according to your own preference.
3) Computer (PC, Laptop, or Mac) with USB port: Note: The modem will come up with software installation. You will use the software to get connected to the internet later on. In case you are new with this just follow the instruction provided Celcom’s technical staff/reseller. It’s pretty straight-forward.
My Experience:
My father and I registered ours at one Celcom Broadband reseller nearing the end of last year. The package we chose is D68. We were provided with Celcom postpaid 3G sim card, and Huawei USB modem. The activation took less than a day and the next day we were able to connect to the internet.
The advantages: Good surfing speed, mobile connectivity, extremely easy to setup, small modem

The disadvantages: Uploading problem at certain time (now the issue has been resolved), shared IP (it’s almost impossible for us to download from shared file hosting such as Rapidshare, USAUpload, etc), capped P2P and bittorent, timeout and disconnection problem when the signal is not good, not suitable for downloading.
So, based from above it is advised that Streamyx users who plan to
migrate to Celcom Broadband should think more than twice as they will not get the benefits they’ve enjoyed with their Streamyx subscription such as dedicated ip address, fast upload/download speed, etc.
For file downloading purpose, Streamyx is still better or for those who don’t want both, they can try P1 WiMax.
Conclusion: Overall, Celcom Broadband is good if you are a student/worker who want to get connected to the internet with mobility, flexibility, affordability and ease of use or if your area has no Streamyx or WiMax coverage.
If you’re thinking of using it with a downloading machine then it’s not recommended as there’s bandwidth volume allocation for each package (5GB for D68 and D98, 25GB for Pay-Per-Use, and 1GB for daily unlimited).
Rating: *** (3/5 stars)

What, 3\5 thats way to high , you should give it 0.5\5 even that is still high… ive been using the d98 and Celcom capped my speed to not more then 10kbps, im not lying, thats way to low … lower than the 56kbps … to make it worst, as the T&C says, the capping should last for a month, thats totally nonsense, my speed is still throttled from the day it got capped and i called and emailed em, they said that they are also having lots of problem on their own. dumb stupid excuse… i though its only at first, but i was wrong, vast majority of celcom users is having this difficulties. at last, i stop paying the bill … i can get a 1 mb package from streamyx with modem using that money …
May 15th, 2009 at 10:40 am
this state run company(bsnl) is offering real good speed..i have one..note that the speed is between 256kbps upto 2 mbps.i had used tataindicom..(pathetic..)..but bsnl is giving real broadband.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
That was the reason why I suggested Streamyx user not to migrate to Celcom Broadband plan. Heavy usage doesn’t work well with this service.

My 3G Celcom Broadband connection is activated but the internet explorer can’t display the web page? It says that there’s something to do with the Domain name server. What to do about it?
May 20th, 2009 at 6:24 am
Maybe you need to contact the customer care regarding the problem of yours? It’s their job so I think they will assist you from A-Z.
May 20th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
@Wildlife
Maybe the IP Configuration or your DNS have something to do with it.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:27 pm
It’s been a while since i last visited your blog
Anyway, i use streamyx and never tried celcom broadband before. my niece has P1 wimax, but the connection is bad. Maybe it’s due to the place she’s staying, but i think it is still bad telling people that it cant be used when most of the time, there’s no connection although the signal is there.
May 22nd, 2009 at 6:47 am
Welcome back!
I’m sorry to hear about your niece. It’s true that for any wireless connection the coverage is the most important so it’s wise to check with the ISP first before subscribing to any service.
May 23rd, 2009 at 1:01 pm
please give me some details on this…in term of the speed, cost, customer service and anything related to it.and is their unlimited package REALLY unlimited?
May 23rd, 2009 at 1:02 pm
do celcom broadband offers coverage in Bandar Jengka especially UiTM Jengka?
or do they even have 3G there?
May 23rd, 2009 at 1:02 pm
i using usb direct connection from HSDPA USB MODEM to my pc…can or not if i sharing this connection to another pc or laptop..how?using bluetooth or hub?
May 24th, 2009 at 6:08 am
I agree with the download prob. Celcom Broadband uses shared IP and so, bye bye rapidshare, megaupload etc.
Speed, mobility, for me, is quite okay.
P1 Wimax, anyone had tried it? is it OK or KO?
Because the slowest I heard is actually 1 mbps?
May 25th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Some reported problem with Celcom Broadband during certain peak hours. They have to switch to GPRS instead of HSDPA. Should be annoying to the users who face this kind of problem as GPRS is slow as snail.
May 26th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
It would seem Malaysia has better internet than I do here in USA. I have cable one and it lags if a game is running and websites are browsed at the same time, which is pathetic. I had Smart broadband wireless when I lived in the Philippines and it was actually very fast and reliable.
May 26th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
The only internet service in Malaysia that could match USA’s regular internet speed is P1 Wimax with 10Mbps download speed.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:43 am
cELCOM Brpadband is the worst. They usually close my connection port on 26 every month. I pay every month and yet they close it because it’s time for me to pay. They should ask to pay on 30 every month as gaji only in around that date. STUPID CELCOM
Cant wait the contracvt to end. Want to change to other
May 27th, 2009 at 7:52 am
That’s awful if it’s true. Well, for your case just save an amount of money to pay the bill for the next month when you get your salary in the current month. On 26th of next month, head to Celcom’s kiosk to settle the payment.
May 30th, 2009 at 6:34 am
me using celcom broadband, and satisfied with the service.. i would say i can give 4 out of 5 stars.. the problem that you all mention (such as shared ip, capped speed after 5GB usage, slow connection if coverage is not good, etc) is a normal problem for 3G wireless service.. it is your fault when your area didnot receive good signal but still want to subscribe.. about the 5GB usage, other provider such as maxis and digi also set usage quota.. this is because the limitation of 3g bandwith..
May 31st, 2009 at 5:38 am
@holaBola:
Hope major Malaysia telcos will soon upgrade HSDPA to HSPA or HSPA+. Celcom broadband still lacks with low upload speed making it not very reliable for those making serious business using the internet. Imagine video conference with only 384Kbits/s uplink.
Digi already invested $42.4 million for HSPA infrastructure in Malaysia, which they offer with their wireless broadband service but with limited coverage since it is still in early development stage.

I’m a foreigner who came to KL for a short business trip. Trying to cut my own internet cost, so went and bought the prepaid Celcom broadband.
The remarkably good thing thing is this. It costs only RM6 per 24 hours. Which is horrendously cheap if we put into the perspective of Hotel Internet
The remarkably bad thing is this. It does not work that well. In fact, I can almost say that it does not work at all. The link is disconnected every 5 minutes, and that’s the least of my problems.
When its connected, net surfing don’t seem to work. I had to wait 5 minutes for this page to load, and in fact, while I’m typing this, it IS still loading.
My MSN fails to connect. My E-Mail (POP3, IMAP, Lotus Notes) ALL fails to connect. Basically, I’ve just thrown away RM6 for a night in my Hotel.
I’ve tried to connect via GPRS (Yes, I can live with SLOW, but let me check my mail), I tried to connect with WCDMA (3G), and I’m seeing HSPDA on my Huawei 3G, but so far, nothing works.
To others who are saying that 3G broadband is crap. They are wrong. I’ve used good 3G broadband regularly and it isn’t cheap. It CAN be as reliable, effective, and as fast as (in my case, faster then) home broadband.
In fact, my 2Mbps 3G Broadband is faster then my 10Mbps Cable, especially when I’m streaming YouTube… Anyway, I’m also happy. This gives me the perfect excuse to sleep and not work.. Oh well
June 1st, 2009 at 5:27 am
Thanks for sharing us your experience when using prepaid version of Celcom Broadband, Inix. I’m eager to hear what holaBola would say after reading that.
In some hotels here, cable broadband is provided. Most of the hotels in Malaysia offers free wireless internet connection while few of them (the cheap ones) do not provide internet service at all.

I’m currently used celcom 3g. I hv tried maxis 3g last time but not statisfied. I try benchmark my celcom 3g broadband and always get 1.32+ Mbps using http://www.speedtest.net. My friend always said that they hv problem with 3g broadband, and i found they always plug usb 3g direct to usb port at laptop/pc. My advice.. plug usb 3g to usb cable using supply usb cable or buy usb cable. Place your usb 3g away from metal/desk surface. If u are at hotel room, place it near windows. U should get clean 3g signal.. and your 3g exprience improved. Don’t share your usb 3g with other device at same usb port !!
June 3rd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
That’s right M syafiq, as explained in this post:
http://www.bloganything.net/1157/optimize-celcom-broadband-connection
Some people in the internet reported to have boost the signal using a kind of antenna they brought from Indonesia which is not available in Malaysia. Anybody knows about it?
June 10th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
I’ve used the Celcom Broadband whilst visiting KL. Its fairly useless and compares very badly to the Vodafone 3G mobile broadband available in other countries. Although there is often a strong signal for connecting to the cell, it is very difficult to load a webpage. Overseas websites are virtually impossible to get and Malaysian sites or sites such as Yahoo which may be hosted in Malaysia will load with difficulty and erratically. Something is seriously wrong. Celcom please fix it.
June 12th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
I’m gathering info about celcom broadband before I take account and consider to purchase the service. My hometown area is lacking of everything. I have a 3G phone and sometimes I get connected to the web by using GPRS because there’s no 3G signal in this remote area. Luckily I can connect by using GPRS (I’m a Maxis prepaid subscriber)…but the problem is, this service cuts me off and burns the credits…as I use prepaid. In a split seconds…my credit is left to 0. I just wanna know, if I subscribe this celcom broadband, is there any chance I could connect to the web? Because as far as I know, it connects by using 3G…
June 16th, 2009 at 11:35 am
I felt ripped off by Celcom claims of high bandwidth spped. I used broadband 3G USB or PCMIA card in KL and Borneo while traveling. It’s ok to read email or surf the web. I would not recommend it for the serious business user or a person that relys on chat-relays to conduct business, (SMS) is better way to go. I found download speed was useless for big files and documents and bitTorrents speed was flat in the mud. I went back to streamyX so they still have me hooked. What other choices are there? Now if i could just use my Astro dish to receive broadband like they do in the states…oh humm
June 19th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
[...] using Celcom 3G, some people can get 1.32Mbps+. Well that’s impressive, at least in this [...]
June 23rd, 2009 at 6:31 pm
As long as TELEKOM MALAYSIA is still holding the monopoly and dragging its feet on upgrading Malaysia’s backbone infrastructure, don’t expect to see a faster internet speed OR even a cheaper broadband package by 2030. The so-called Multimedia Super Corridor is already going down the drain.
June 25th, 2009 at 4:14 am
Before u subscribe Celcom broadbad package please referring the coverage that support at ur place http://202.190.116.141/CelcomCoverageIIPub/faces/CelcomCoverage.jsp

i’ve registered for celcom broadband..and till today, the simcard cant be used..the stupid celcom’s staff said it’s because of the simcard faulty..fyi, i’ve changed the simcard for the third time!and i never experience to browse using it..!it’s a bulksh*t if everytime i chabge the simcard, i got the faulty one..damn..
i’ll complaint this matter to kementerian pengguna..
July 9th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
i’m using celcom broadband and not having any problems downloading file from rapidshare etc..sometime you just need to clear cookies from your pc.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Hi all, i started to feel cheated with this service Celcom provided. Its most likely an excuse to switch to other ISP. Why can’t they expand the 3G network to coupe with the increasing subscribers? I am REALLY annoyed
July 16th, 2009 at 8:26 am
bro celcom cannot la… speed only 50kbps… activation takes 4 days… i terminate 2nd day of activation…. then i sign up maxis broadband… ok la… speed much better. of coz streamyx faster but only on good days…. celcom number one is bullshit… they should take the billboards down…
July 18th, 2009 at 6:15 am
i’m currently using this 3g celcom broadband…
B4 this the service was superb with HSDPA connection…
but right now i’m having problem with it…
I only get GPRS connection instead of 3G/HSDPA…
If I am lucky enough, I can get HSDPA connection but with GPRS rate…
ARGHHH!!!!!
I hate slow….
What is the problem with celcom actually huh?

I’m so sad!
August 1st, 2009 at 7:07 am
Dear all, if you experiance problem using Celcom Broadband, this is my tips. always use usb 3g to usb cable using supply usb cable or buy usb cable extention.Put it near window to get the outdoor coverage. Locked your signal to 3G only or UMTS only or WCDMA only. Even your 3g signal is low, as long as you in 3g couverage area you still can received good internet access. even the download speed can’t reach 384 kbps it’s better then 64kbps GPRS service. This is what I learn from my 2 years research and experiance studying 3G Broadband
August 26th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Im using celcom broadband for almost 9 months, for the first few months it was good, but since 2 months ago, i got really bad connection. On day time it was ok, but after 7pm its start hard to connect and keep on disconnecting.
I’ve called the customer service a lot of time asking them to fix it, after few weeks keep calling them at last they said they will send someone to speed test at my area, unfortunately they come without inform me, then suddenly i receive a call and they said they at the front of my home, and i said im working. The next day, there is no improvement, and so i call them again, and they said my case is closed.
i keep call asking them to fix it. and they said this problem occur because of the heavy traffic usage by all celcom broadband user, i wonder if that is bad or good?. Then they told me that they will upgrade the network at my area on mid of august, but now already end of august, i call them again few days ago. and they said they will upgrade it on mid of september.
even now i still having bad experience with celcom broadband. and still cant stop the service because im still under contract few months more, so i just have to pay RM99 every month for nothing until the the contract expire.
September 1st, 2009 at 1:48 am
now we used the package broadband..that is rm50 permonth..i want to know..at my village at kuala kangsar..did we can use it..and how fast it can be..i hope celcom will expend the 3G NETWORK to all the place that have in malaysia..expecially kuala kangsar..
September 8th, 2009 at 7:08 am
I’m so dissapointed on it. thought it will be fast in downloadng but its volume allocation base instead. Using the 98 per month package…yet the speed still -.-…and happen to be disconnect nowadays…can someone fix it? ><
September 8th, 2009 at 7:23 am
Celcom broadband is not as ideal as it is due to the high disconnectivity (currently. I understand that sometimes it is run accordingly to the season peaks but can someone tell me what to do ? cause im in assignment peak also and it did causes lotssss of inconvenient for me ><…does the broadband will be running as slow as snail as days goes on? help pls…
September 18th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

i need to change to others services immediatlly and say goodbye to celcom slowbroadbandever!!!
September 28th, 2009 at 12:05 am
Celcom broadband is HORRIBLE. This is only my 2nd day using and already i’m regretting subscribing to this service. Paid RM98/month and all I get is 5kb/s downloading speed. Uploading is even worst. Tried Maxis also but it’s lousy for VOIP. Looks like I have to get streamyx after all. All ISP in Malaysia are lousy
September 28th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I’m using celcom broadband now, it’s good!
October 2nd, 2009 at 10:58 am
Just recently subscribed to Celcom Broadband RM98. Also I have Streamyx 1MB in use for almost several years.
Celcom Broadband is just didnt match to Streamyx of equivalent package at all. Luckily I didn’t terminate streamyx as yet. But I am sure to terminate Celcom.
Maxis RM68 plan even give you better download speed than Celcom RM98 plan. So think thrice before you get influence by Celcom Promo personals.
My suggestion don’t ever think about it until they can show that they have improved beyond doubt.

Celcom broadband is the worst i,ve ever used slower than dial up…. the customer service is non existant.. don,t waste your time or money with them…. mine still not working … excuse from Celcom engineer Jalan Ampang area very busy? … when can they fix it … answer they don’t know and they don’t really care now they have my money… CELCOM ARE A RIP OFF BE WARNED!
October 10th, 2009 at 2:04 am
I paid for 3G at 98/mth but I’m lucky to get 100kbs let alone 384kbs. Most of the time I’m hanging out my third floor window to get a better signal. The first month was not too bad. At least I could get my emails through. The second month was so bad… the signal was so unstable it ranges from 300 to 0 kbs so much so I can’t even download my email. Even switching to GPRS doesn’t work and I’m in KL central. But if you call up to complain and give your braodband no….. then they will give you a bit more speed. What is Maxis like as I’m thinking of switching?
October 13th, 2009 at 3:41 am
Hi guys. After reading this, i’m realli wondering if i should go ahead with celcom mobile broadband. You see, i’m studying overseas and I go back to Malaysia every half a year. Since I’m overseas most of the time, I do not have internet access when I go back home. The only way for me to access the internet is to go to my friend’s house, which is a hassle. Then i stumble upon the celcom prepaid broadband ad online, and was thinking of getting a starter pack when i go back to Malaysia end of this year. But after reading all the comments, I’m not too sure. My initial plan was either to get a netbook that’s 3G enabled or a usb modem. Since, some of you seem to get reasonable feedback from celcom mobile broadband, i was thinking maybe just get a starter park and try it out for a week. If I dun like it just leave it as it is, and maybe Digi will come out with prepaid mobile broadband in the future as well, hopefully with better speeds than celcom’s. Cuz I’ve asked a few friends, and many have the same issue with celcom and rather use dialup instead. I have heard that digi mobile broadband is wayyyy better than celcom’s, but to what degree… I do not know. So what do you think? Is it worth getting a netbook or a usb modem? With the netbook, I can use it when I’m overseas, but with the usb modem, I don’t need it at all since I have good internet access overseas.
October 20th, 2009 at 10:08 am
When I first saw celcom advertised speed, I can’t wait to get their service. Just imagine 3.6 Mbps! Now on the second day using their d98 service and just getting 288kb for downloading definitely tomorrow I will go to their office to terminate their service. What a lousy advertisement and I wonder how they manage to get away with it. Our Kementerian Hal Ehwal Pengguna should take action on these unscrupulous operators of broadband service. They don’t even have any disclaimer in their brochures. I guess my streamix is much much better even with their 1Mbps speed and their dedicated IP! To our broadband operators, they should invest more of their own money to upgrade their services. Don’t cheat on us to get financing for their next investment.
October 22nd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
This is bad for business, but luckily the information minister has recently highlighted the problem these ISPs have caused. I hope someone is working or not, if not i will hv trouble with visitors from malaysia to view my site

why i’m unable to load banking site such as maybank2u and cimbclicks using celcom bb, but able to do so using my digi edge? any reason/advise?
October 31st, 2009 at 11:16 am
Talking about wireless broadband in Malaysia, Most of the time I didn’t get good speed is because of my modem. The slim Huawei usb modem provided by celcom is less superior compared to the bulky Sierra Wireless USB modem. Furthermore u can plug a RM100 metal antenna to Sierra Wireless modem and that really improves the speed three times better. However I no longer use Sierra Wireless because I recently found out that my Nokia N95 is more powerfull than Sierra in terms of capturing the 3G signal so I’m very happy with my Nokia as my modem now. I’ve tried DIGI in Kota Kinabalu before and it way ahead in terms of speed but DIGI’s coverage is currently very limited in Sabah. All and all, I still prefers Celcom because of its coverage. If you plans to depends on Symbian GPS softwares such as Google Maps when driving around town you’re not familiar of, then maybe you better stick with Celcom because of its (almost) unlimited coverage all over Malaysia.
October 31st, 2009 at 11:20 am
ManULostHooray, wah so slow kah? you better check whether your place got HSDPA or not. 3 minutes almost means that your modem only captures GPRS speed so far.. My place considered small town but at least i’ve never experienced 3 minutes per page download.
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:23 am
@Wildlife
Celcom BB’s DNS is sucks big time….the DNS error is constantly displayed especially if you start to surf to the new site. Change the setting from automatic DNS to opendns’s IP will resolve the problem.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:40 am
celcom broadband is crab. i have been using it for the last 14 months and the average i get is 10 to 20 kbps. can u imagine i am paying rm98 per month for this???? i passed by klia taxi just now, from the back…. celcom broadband is fastest with widest coverage… fu*k……another 8 months to my contract…cant wait. No no for celcom broad band, crab.
November 4th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I just switch to digi broadband from celcom. Remember my earlier posting. Wow….i manage to hit the 2400mbps with digi broadband using the same alcatel modem. Earlier the fastest I can get with celcom was 288kbps!! Congratulation to digi for their fantastic service and also to myself for not sticking with celcom…….. and more I could download from any file sharing sites because of their dedicated IP! And it only cost me RM48 per month for 3Gb and same speed!!
November 5th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
i prefer land-lines)
November 29th, 2009 at 4:41 am
Yup just switched to digi….. definitely much faster and cheaper at RM48/mth. And better service. Bought my Celcom package earlier at PC fair 09 and the dealer told me that I can switch to any Telco any time. When I wanted to cancel, found out that my modem was locked. By that time had already subscribed to Digi package who also told me just have to insert SIM card it’s “plug and play”. Went to Celcom branch in PJ who told me that it cannot be unlocked and to go back to the dealer Telventure. Salesman told me to get it unlocked in Low Yat Celcom but of course did not tell me they charge RM100 for that. Attitude there extremely bad and very cocky. Moral of the story…. buyer beware. We should all go on to the MCMC Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission website. They have a complaint section there for consumers.

haha… started with P1 WIMAX last October. Connection is poor. In a day can only get 10-20 minute of online time. Aside from doing the ‘extension’ 5m of usb cable but in vain. Giving ‘the finger’ to P1 – not going to pay ur bills…..so sue me. Switch to maxis bb with my current hotlink number using my sony ericsson K530i as a modem. RM8 per day use 400MB limit. Well… fair connection no downtime. Their site offer bandwidth test page – shows 41% of capability. Currently using Celcom Prepaid Broadband. Follow the instruction on the pack and off I go. Less than 2 minute. Can get 79% – tested using the same maxis bandwidth speed test page. I must say that Celcom is better and cheaper compared to maxis.

i’ve used both Maxis & Digi to connect via USB modem for my internet connection.
Maxis=forget about it unless you are in Klang Valley/within 3G area. Even if you have fantastic speed, forget about any P2P activities. The connection is intermittent. GPRS, EDGE, 3G going on a loop. Stick to Streamyx for ‘heavy’ usage. I can testify to Streamyx ‘capability’ for P2P;)
Digi=have tried the EDGE at some God forsaken place like my kampung (in some ulu in Melaka) and at Kg Kong Kong in Johor. reasonable speed. cannot remember exactly the speed but it’s better than GPRS speed.
BUT digi sucks for telephone calls when you are are in a building.
Terminated Digi to opt for Maxis but now am reverting back to the good ol’ Digi for my ‘portable’ internet.
