I usually use Utorrent as my primary torrent client to download stuff using the P2P technology. It has become my favorite for few months and let me share you some tricks to boost your bittorrent download speed if you’re using Utorrent as the bittorrent client. I assume that you have already corrected your NAT problem by port-forwarding your modem/router. For port-forwarding guide, go to portforward.com.
The first trick: Increase the max half-open TCP connections
This is the basic thing to do. Since Windows XP with SP2 limit the TCP connections to only 10, a hack needed to be done to increase the value. Torrent technology requires your connection to connect many IP as possible to achieve the best speed. The limitation will seriously hurts your downloading and uploading speed.
How to fix that? Well, we need a TCP/IP patch.
Get the patch here. At the console, choose any number that you want.50 -100 connections should be fine. Then, restart your computer.
Configure Utorrent to allow 50-100 max half-open TCP connections
The next thing to do is to set Utorrent’s setting itself.
1) Open your Utorrent program.
2) Go to Options > Preferences > Advanced options > net.max_halfopen
3) Set the value according the number that you have chosen before. (50-100)
Set the correct upload speed
Another important setting is the upload speed. An advisable speed would be 80% of your upload speed. As example, I got 56kbits/sec upload speed for my connection. Then, the suitable upload speed for my connection is 28KByte/sec. This tweak will help Utorrent to download the data efficiently and avoid bandwidth wasting. For the download speed, set the number to unlimited (:0)
Final trick: Always update Utorrent when update is available.
Most ISP used a technology like traffic-shaping to block your torrent connection. Getting the latest version of Utorrent client might help you to fix slow download speed by bypassing the technology using some hacks like protocol encryption. You need to do a trial and error to determine which version works best for you.
In my opinion, downloading torrent via local torrent tracker is still the best way to get top-notch speed because of the seeding rule that the webmaster usually set.

I recommend you to use Orbit Downloader. It has a TCP/IP patch included in their program. Get the latest version here:

In fact, guides like this are posted throughout the whole net… Same instructions. But, I have to say, it works, like many others. So I give you a thumbs up since it actually works ^^.
Just telling everyone… yes, the download speed can decrease/increase dramatically depending on the amount of seeders. BUT, be aware that the things that change the speed the most is your internet speed (doh, a 512k can get up to around 60 kb/s max) and the port routing.
If ports are closed, a lot LESS seeders (around 95% of them) will not be able to connect to you and share the file. You can check if it’s good by looking at the “check”, “alert” or “x” symbol on the bottom of Utorrent. (Green is good… yellow and red are bad)
Overall, nice job. I have no idea of who you are, but I seem to like your contribution. Keep it up!

Hmm, a heads up, the patch is infected with a keylogger and a virus. The keylogger is meant to steal passwords and it’s NOT DETECTED BY ANTI-VIRUSES, so DON’T DOWNLOAD THAT PATCH.
