My friend ask me how to fix his corrupted XP files (mostly Windows System Files).
Well, actually that problem can be solved easily, using this few steps. This is what Im going to share with you today.
The things that you will need:
Windows XP Operating System
Windows XP CD
Steps:
1) First place the CD into your CD/DVD Drive.
2) Go to start
3) type “run”
4) type in “sfc /scannow” (without the “)
Now, it should load and fix all your corrupted file on Windows XP.

Thought/Question…if you are on XP SP2, wouldn’t you need an XP SP2 install CD to fix your system files or risk installing older versions?

mazzyc,
Check this site, it gives some reasons for this problem. It is most likely because you have added a new HDD or CD which shifted the drive letters so that the system is looking for the files on the wrong drive letter.

All:
Need to ask a question. I have a PC (Dell Latitude D600) that will not boot up..keep getting blue screen with message “fatal error” etc…I got the diagnostics disk out and ran tests. There are several message blocks that say ” uncorrectable data error or media is write protected”. My hard drive was encrypted with PointSec and now we have decrypted it hoping that it would fix the issue or at least let me get to some of my files. However, the Blue screens continued so we put the hard drive into a USB enclosure and hooked it up to my other PC as an external drive. I can read the C: drive but where my files are all at on the D: drive it says “The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”….Sorry for the long story..here is my question…I know that some of the drive is bad but do I have to lose my entire 3 years of data ? do I take the hard drive to a shop that fixes drives or is there some software that I can use or can I run chkdks or something just on that drive ? Looking for answers, thanks everyone

Hi
I have a peculiar problem in my XP machine. Mp3 files written thru my Samsung DVD writer (model 202j) are not playable in other DVD or audio players. The tracks are jumping and disturbed. These tracks play ok even when you play on the PC from the same CD on which they are written. But not outside the PC. It does not play in any other PC also.
What could be the issue? Recently I formatted my C drive and reinstalled the XP afresh and applied all the patches. Still the problem persists.
Would appreciate if some one help me out.
I have checked, there is no issue with the DVD writer.
Thanks.

Go to start, run, then type “CMD”. Now type “sfc /scannow”
This is what I had to do.

Do you need to have a CD specific to Windows XP for this to work? All that came with my Gateway laptop was a restore DVD that contains Windows XP along with additional software specific to my Gateway computer. I tried your method using this DVD but it didn’t work. A window kept appearing stating that I had the wrong CD.

Hello. I have a serious problem with my computer involving a corrupt Microsoft Word 07 file. The file has my thesis and it refuses to open. I downloaded a program and it opened it, but due to the fact that it is a trial version, I was unable to save the recovered document. Is there a simpler way or efficient way to get this file back in order? I’m really desperate. Thanks.

Mac: Google and download IBM Lotus (it’s free). Use it to look at and save the file, making sure to adjust the type to Word 2003 (.doc). Also probably a good idea to give it a new name.
Lotus can be a bit balky to use, but it has saved my bacon and the price is right…

Thanks anyway Eric. I solved the problem online like about 2 weeks ago. You can’t imagine the amount of programs they have that can recover your documents from Word. Only problem now that I think need s development in that area is the fact that when you recover a doc, any images you placed in the doc won’t be recovered. I was actually doing this recovery for a friend of mine. She got all the text back but the 30 or so images on her thesis went “poof”. She has since recovered.

I have a dell 1525 just over a year old. Today while working on a paper, my computer froze, i restarted it and i was welcomed with the wonderful blue screen of death: error code 0×0000C1F5. I was told due to a corrupted microsoft file. I am not technologically advanced and was wondering if i could fix this on my own? if i could recover all my data? or if i need to send it off to be repaired? is this a simple fix? if so how, and what would i need?

About half the photos I had saved on my portable harddrive have been corrupted. I can’t see, open or delete them. I’ve accepted the fact I won’t get them back but they won’t bloody go away!!

here’s some of step by step to solve this problems …
Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
When the “Welcome to Setup” screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:
md tmp
copy c:windowssystem32configsystem c:windowstmpsystem.bak
copy c:windowssystem32configsoftware c:windowstmpsoftware.bak
copy c:windowssystem32configsam c:windowstmpsam.bak
copy c:windowssystem32configsecurity c:windowstmpsecurity.bak
copy c:windowssystem32configdefault c:windowstmpdefault.bak
delete c:windowssystem32configsystem
delete c:windowssystem32configsoftware
delete c:windowssystem32configsam
delete c:windowssystem32configsecurity
delete c:windowssystem32configdefault
copy c:windowsrepairsystem c:windowssystem32configsystem
copy c:windowsrepairsoftware c:windowssystem32configsoftware
copy c:windowsrepairsam c:windowssystem32configsam
copy c:windowsrepairsecurity c:windowssystem32configsecurity
copy c:windowsrepairdefault c:windowssystem32configdefault
Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart
