Radio Controlled Car racing or R/C racing is a famous hobby in late 90’s until now and I’m sure most of us would agree with that especially the guys. The technology in the industry has become incredibally advanced an no wonder many radio -controlled car nowadays has reached the speed of 80 miles per hour with proper tuning. Some of them has surpassed the speed of a ‘real car’ like famous 1598cc Mini Cooper.

As you can see in the market, there are electric powered and fuel-powered radio controlled car. Which one is better to buy? Which car is the fastest? Before I answer all the questions, let us take look into some informations about radio controlled car.
There are two types of radio controlled car. The first one is Electric powered where it uses the nickel cadmium rechargeable battery as the power supply while the second one is fuel powered models which use a special mixture of nitromethana, methanol, and oil. Fuel powered radio controlled car is usually refereed to as “nitro cars”. Both type of power have both advantages and disadvantages.
Electric powered models

The advantages:
Any model that uses electric as it’s energy source usually will stay cleaner and quiter during the operation time. It is also lighter in weight and require less maintenance than fuel-powered models. The advantage can bee seen when the car is acccelerating where the weight of a car plays a major part. It can also beat fuel-powered models in throttle response.
The disadvantages:
They do not reach the same speed that can be achieved by fuel-powered remote control car unless expensive upgrades are added. High performance electric motor is also required to be cool down after being used to avoid demagnetizing and permanent magnets.
Fuel powered models

The advantages:
It can reach higher top speed than electric radio controlled car. Maximum power is achieved at medium to top speed. Hence, they can beat unmodified electric powered model easily at a long race. There are ready-to-run fuel powered cars that can be purchased so don’t worry about the technical stuff if you’re newbie.
The disadvantages:
It produced dirt. A short five minute run of such engine is sufficient in dirt from fuel combustion. Tuning a fuel-powered vehicle also needed high skill to maintain optimum performance, good working engine condition, and fuel economy.
Which is the most suitable car to buy? Which one is the fastest?
Simply said, if you’re concern in top speed, nitro car is the most suitable. If you prefer cleanliness and simplicity, then electric car is the best choice. However, the condition may change depending on how well you will fine tune the car.
Currently, The Guinness Book of World’s Records lists the fastest ever top speed of radio-controlled car is at the speed of 111 mph (178.63 km/h) set by Cliff Lett of Associated Electrics. It’s a not normal electric-powered rc car, but an extremly modified version by Clift Lett.

An upcoming version of the remote car might left your car behind soon..

Hi
The fastest speed by an RC car is 134.4 mph by Nic Case in July 2006 at the California Speedway in Fontana. It was an electric car. Electric cars are faster than Nitro.
The fastest speed by an IC car was by me, A J Lovering at the Shakespeare County Raceway in UK in September 2007 at 103mph (the car was stuck in 1st gear)
The next speed event will be in July and September 2008 in USA and UK and we are hoping to break 150 moh
Cheers
