Usually I don’t have the motivation to spend my time reading an article with thousands of words but yesterday I did it. Well, I read an emotional article about Why Nerds Are Unpopular by Paul Graham. This is the definitions of the word “nerd” according to Dictionary.com just in case anyone here doesn’t know what’s the meaning:

The first definition is quite insulting if you ask me so I prefer the second one which I think is widely use than the first definition.

In the article, Paul Graham had the idea that nerds are unpopular in school because they are too busy and interested with more interesting stuffs such as computer programming, science, doing math and physics excercises, and playing computer games. In the same time, they also score well in school’s examinations.

Kids are sent off to spend six years memorizing meaningless facts in a world ruled by a caste of giants who run after an oblong brown ball, as if this were the most natural thing in the world. And if they balk at this surreal cocktail, they’re called misfits. Life in this twisted world is stressful for the kids. And not just for the nerds. Like any war, it’s damaging even to the winners.

From “normal person” perception, nerd is uncool because they seems to ignore social activities. Some of the students in high school envy those nerds who scored good grade in their exam making nerd hard to get girlfriend and build a friendship with everyone, especially when they did not study in elite schools.

Nerd don’t really care with their physical appearance such as pimple problem, inversely than a lot of teenagers nowadays. They also don’t need to figure out how to become popular because they think that it is dumb. It’s hard to believe, but 90% percent of what he wrote is me and I’m having the same condition in school.

No wonder I don’t like to go hang out with my non-nerds friend. No wonder I don’t have any girlfriend right now. No wonder why I always be in front of the computer. No wonder why I smell something fishy with what people talk about me in school.

No wonder, no wonder, no wonder..

Someone told me that normal people is trained to “please people” while we (nerd) is there to find the truth (answer)? Hmm..I’m not sure about that because it is a weird world that we are living in here, but I guess there is a meaning on nerd’s existence. I myself, always dreaming of becoming an intellectual that achieve can contribute something useful to the community/ummah. Do normal teenagers have that ambition too? I believe that they are certainly yes but not that many.

To parents out there, you should know that your son could be a nerd and have difficult things to face up especially in high school. So, give them support mentally and financally so that they will enjoy their teenage lifetime better. haha..
