Living in Malaysia and using internet broadband service Streamyx from TMNet? You will notice that bittorrent download is currently blocked via bandwidth capping by TMnet. As result, we as the users won’t be able to download file easily from international peers using Bittorrent unless there are other Malaysian streamyx users seeding the file. Sometimes, the download speed can fall to a rate that’s not even imaginable by modern internet user and if we managed to download the file, surely it had took few hours of pain (2kbps anyone?).
Now, let’s just forget the suffering that we all hate to have. To solve this problem we can subscribe for VPN or Torrent Flux server. The methods have proven to gives out nice result from test result in local internet forum but that method will cost us some money for the service charge. Fortunately there is alternative free method that enable us to download with decent speed which is by using bittorrent client called Xunlei (in Chinese) or Thunder (in English).
Stumbled upon it via famous local torrent site few weeks ago, I decided to test it immediately and from the result, I was excited to see that it got me nice download speed for both local and international files download. Maybe TMnet can’t block the bt client due to the language used, huh? (Just like the previous Toutou bt client). Hope this will last long.
I can’t provide the screenshot though here as I’ve formatted my computer, It’s not that I don’t want to show you the proof. Anyway, it was only available in Chinese language at first but a Lowyat.net member HeheHunter has made it available in English with no ads so credit to him. I suggest you to try and see if Xunlei / Thunder would be able to beat your convesional bt clients (utorrent, bitcomet, or azureus).
Download link, instructions, and FAQ are available at Thunder Download Page.

another good tip! Thanks again!

Hmm, this torrent client works wonders. Even with the translation though, this torrent cannot resume a partially downloaded file, nor can it add multiple trackers, which is bad if you cannot get peers/seeds from other URLs. You can’t even add a second tracker manually.
But despire those, any torrent with 100+ seeds with defnitely get you 50kbp/s speed and above.
Thank you for the tip. =)

I got here via google search string of “xunlei not downloading”. I see that the same search has been repeated 3 times. Xunlei is pretty temperamental for me. One day I could be downloading at full rate, a couple of days later the same torrent would drop down to 0 and stay there. Pausing and resuming at that point can sometimes be useless, or not. If I leave it off for a few days then pick up the download again, it’d shoot back up to full speed. Odds are way better than 4D, I’d say, but only just. Thought I’d put my experience down here as a case study. Xunlei may work for you, only not all the time.

how does this compare with encrypted bittorent?
September 4th, 2007 at 3:19 am
i’m a sufferer myself ever since they capped this bt sh*t only god knows how long ago. i initially thought it was my bt client that was faulty when i first noticed the problem. so i started to try all sorts of clients but they all wield the same damn result, that i could only dl a decent speed from fellow malaysians and get like less than 1kb from peers from any other country. i was seriously frustrated and trust me, it is a damn.freaking.pain especially if you are someone who dls very obscure indie stuff regularly from a particular tracker that hardly any malaysian would dl. i’ve long since given up on it then i happen to stumble across this blog. i’ll give it a try so thanks for the tip man.

soo guys does this client still works??
September 22nd, 2007 at 8:03 am
@Deadnight: not for me. That’s why I bothered to google for bt+client+throttling again, and found my way back on this exact same page. I’m now on over a month’s use/abuse of Rapidshare, and am just about ready to crawl back to whatever shady VPN service they got over in Low Yat.

Although streamyx already throttle p2p but we still got way to by pass it.
Firstly, check your window Half open TCP/IP connection is how many. WINXP2 default is 5 only !! I suggested modify more than 512.
Secondly, MUST enable encryption function in BT, emule or other p2p software. After we enbale it, p2p will send packets through PORT 80. Streamyx wouldn’t block PORT 80.
MAke sure do this 2 settings. I live at KL,setapak. I can play BT (>70kbps),Thunder (>60kbps), Online TV, Online Game ALL at same time with 1mb !!

CRAP those streamyx people…!!!!

Anyone tested dl torrent using allpeers, a very good firefox extension?
I’ve tried using xunlei thunder and some other clients such as utorrent, azureus and bitcomet but the speed is roughly above 5kbps…
But hey, with allpeers my average dl speed is around 15kbps, not really impressive but better than 5kbps at all…
Allpeers is good, but as of now, it lacks several options and not customizable…give it a try..
Peace and out !!!

All you need to do is grab the latest version from me.

Xunlei Chinese version and English version has major performance differences. The English version frankly sucks, my network or its ISP has an BT blocker of sorts and uTorrent gets capped bad. Xunlei English version is faster but still never manage more than 50kb/s after a long time.
Fortunately I have the Chinese version and I have to say it replaced all my other download softwares. For torrent files for example, no matter how busy the network it, it now consistently give me 500kb to 600kb DL, sometimes 1.5mb/s, something uTorrent never gave me even if I’m not on a 200 people network.
even better, if you use it as a regular download client, it will make sure you utilize all your system’s bandwidth. What does that mean? If I use firefox download manager to download from a site and get 50kb/s, using Xunlei gives me 1.5mb/s. I think it’s because it simultaneously connects to the server with 200 threads.
Anyway, get the Chinese version called Xunlei 5, you won’t be disapointed.

I’m not sure about you guys but I use Thunder in a pc with ZoneAlarm firewall. When i allow Thunder to act as a server, the ShieldsUp test from Gibson Research failed my port 80.
Anyway, it still can download after I deny its server request.
I guess it’s okay.
Can anyone explain, please ?

I try using Xun Lei but nothing change for my download speed.
I got better way to bypass streamyx capping. Speed can reach up to 150kbps using 1mb package.

I found another small bittorrent client which works great for me…its Halite BitTorrent Client.
http://wingloon.com/2008/02/27/halite-bittorrent-client-0302-released/
I am getting good speed using Halite. Replaced it with Deluge which frequently crashed.

Thunder is only effect to download Hong Kong series, Taiwan series and Korean series. I know Thunder can bypass streamyx P2P, I have always download Hong Kong Series from http://www.hdzone.org (Sometimes I can watch the latest episode before Hong Kong TVB and Astro On Demand release) Usually the series download speed can reach 120kbps ~ 150kbps. The maximum record I ever saw is download speed 170kbps for my 1M streamyx package.
However, when I turn to download softwares and games from US websites such as http://www.mininova.org, http://www.isohunt.com, http://www.torrentspy.com, http://www.piratebay.org. Thunder running really slow, even sometimes is 0kbps.
Yesterday I download a software “Cakewalk Sonar 7.0 Producer” which have total 3.07GB. When I wake in the morning, I open thunder and the download speed is 0kbps~3kbps.
After that, I was closed thunder then try utorrent because most people there are using utorrent to download that 3.07GB file. So I change to download with uTorrent. The download speed start from average 16kbps. When I download until 30%, the download speed reach 30kbps~40kbps. Then now 57%, the download speed is around 90kbps~110kbps.
